Joseph P. Tumulty Receives Gustavus Kirby

This photograph shows a man, probably Joseph P. Tumulty, private secretary to President Woodrow Wilson, receiving Gustavus Town Kirby, president of the American Olympic Committee, outside of the White House. Kirby went to the White House to present the title of honorary president of the American Olympic Committee to President Wilson, likely in anticipation of the 1920 Olympic Games in Antwerp, Belgium. Tumulty accepted the title in the name of the president. After President Wilson suffered a debilitating stroke in October 1919, Tumulty stood as proxy for the president at many official functions.
